Is a Business the Way I Reconnect with Myself?

Discover the self-abandonment pattern that leads to disconnection — and how to know if starting a business will close that cycle, or just repeat it.

Women don't wake up thinking, I plan to self-abandon today. Nobody chooses this on purpose. It's a covert, pervasive pattern that runs quietly under the surface of an otherwise capable, high-functioning life — which is exactly why it's so easy to miss. If left to run under the surface of a woman's life, it becomes a pathway for disconnection from herself.

Self-abandonment is the ongoing habit of putting your own needs, feelings, and truth last — not only through big decisions, but through hundreds of small ones, each aimed at staying safe, loved, or valuable in someone else's eyes.

Self-abandonment is a protection pattern, not a character flaw

The pattern comes with good intentions attached — the goal underneath it is always to be safe, loved, seen as valuable. These are our core and highly human needs.

Which is why it's such a masterful pattern. It's not clumsy or obvious — it's precise, adaptive, and almost entirely unconscious. Most women only discover it's been running their life once they've hit burnout, or they can feel it approaching.

The pattern asks you to empty yourself more than you replenish

Every act of self-abandonment is a small withdrawal. Nothing is being deposited back. It's also so easy to miss in a high-capacity woman, because she can tolerate challenge and difficulty — she may even make it look easy. That doesn't mean she doesn't need nourishment. Left unchecked, the cycle always wins in the end. Run that pattern for long enough — a year, a decade, a career — and depletion isn't a risk. It's the guaranteed outcome.

The quiet cost: it blocks joy

Burnout is the loud consequence. But there's a quieter one running the whole time: it blocks joy. Not because your life lacks good things in it, but because joy needs presence, and the pattern has quietly been asking you to be somewhere else — managing, performing, anticipating — instead of actually here.

A business is only the remedy if you don't bring the pattern with you

A business is a great way to move beyond the grip of self-abandonment — but only if you don't bring the pattern with you. You'll be your own boss, which gets glamorised without much thought to what it actually means in practice. So ask yourself: would you want to work for you? How would that boss talk to you? Would they prioritise you — or run you the same way the pattern always has?

But the business itself isn't the remedy. What you build it from is.

Bring the pattern into your business, and it runs harder — not softer

If the pattern comes with you, it doesn't soften just because you're the founder now. It runs harder and faster, because now there's no boundary of an employer, a job description, or clocking off. The client comes first. The customer is always right. You say yes to work with someone you don't actually believe in, because turning it down feels risky.

Each of those is a small hit — issued by you, to you — reinstating the same old message: you are not my first priority. A business built on top of an unexamined pattern doesn't interrupt it. It gives it a bigger stage.

Earning as your true self is the real destination — business or not

Here's the more honest answer: whether you close this cycle through a business or not, the real destination is the same — earning a living while being genuinely, fully yourself.

Some women can find that inside a container someone else has built — a job, a role, an organization that actually lets them show up as they are. Some can't, and building something of their own is the only structure that will hold their real self. But you're unlikely to know clearly which one you are before you've actually met yourself. That meeting has to come first — and it needs to be with your current self, not who you were ten years ago. It's about who you are now. The business decision comes after, not instead of it.

This pattern runs through most of us — it's collective, not personal

This pattern is not who you are. It's deeply hooked into good girl conditioning in the collective unconscious — it runs through most of us, collectively, shaped by the same forces that taught all of us safety comes from being useful, easy, and good. Which is exactly why it's so hard to see clearly from the inside, on your own.

Working with someone who can see the pattern you can't yet see for yourself is the faster, clearer path — not because you're incapable of finding it alone, but because it wasn't built to be visible to the person living inside it.

If this is where you're standing right now — sensing the pattern, not yet sure if a business is the way through it or just a new place for it to hide — that's exactly what the Free Business Clarity Workshop is for. A live, small-group space to actually meet what's been running the show, before you build anything on top of it.
